Online seminar: Live performance and XR
Online
Hear about two research and development projects funded by XR Network+ that are exploring how extended reality (XR) technologies can be used within the field of live performance to provide new experiences for audiences and to improve existing processes for creators.
Full body haptics technology can simulate what it is like to absorb the impact of a rugby tackle, to wrestle with a water cannon, and to experience the G-force of a Formula 1 car – so what is the potential for live theatre audiences?
Chismic Play – a partnership between Abertay University and Scottish Youth Theatre – used both standard and custom-made haptic devices, which provided a more precise and varied set of sensations, and brought them into a live performance.
Presenters Naman Merchant (Abertay University) and Jamie Steedman (Scottish Youth Theatre) will explain how the auditory and physiological responses of performers wearing these haptic suits were recorded and translated through game engines, with audiences then invited to immerse themselves in the performance space and experience distinct haptic sensations in synchronisation with the performers.
For our second presentation, Daniel Strutt (Goldsmiths University of London) and Alexander Whitley (Alexander Whitley Dance Company) will share findings from their ‘Remote Collaborative Networking Tools for Virtual Dance Creation: AWDC’s Otmo and Goldsmiths Mocap Streamer’ project.
Alexander Whitley Dance Company’s Otmo software is designed to enable movement creators to dynamically explore and plan choreography in a 3D virtual environment. Earlier stages of the Goldsmiths’ collaboration integrated the features of the Mocap Streamer tool to create Otmo Live – a prototype virtual production tool for dance that supports live mocap user-input from anywhere in the world and facilitates remote interaction between performers. This recent phase of the collaboration project was focused on extending and refining a professional suite of import tools in both Otmo and Otmo Live, holistically supported by the Mocap Streamer code-base, and enabling users to input their own mocap recordings and share their creations with collaborators.
This webinar will be hosted by John Rose-Adams (XR Stories/XR Network+) and, following the presentations, John will chat to the presenters about their work. The webinar will also feature an update on current activity from the wider XR Network+ project.
