XR Network+ seminar: The future of fashion

2:00 pm - 18 Sep 2024

Online

Learn about two research and development projects led by University of the Arts London that are using extended reality (XR) technologies to diversify and democratise access to culture and fashion.

Donatella Barbieri and Ben Turnbull (both from the London College of Fashion), will discuss their “Charged Objects of Performance” project. This project uses volumetric capture technologies to capture and amplify the materiality and movement of culturally specific performance. It explores the processes by which 3D scanning and RGB video technologies can enhance a communally designed and made costume, within a 4D performance context.

Working with Yoruba and Pan-African diasporic communities of textile artists and performers, and drawing on interdisciplinary approaches to fashion and performance, the project has used the volumetric capture process to devise a short Yoruba performance. This co-creative process is conceived to propose digitalized textiles performance to museum audiences as an alternative to dominant Western performance paradigms.

The second project, presented by Nina Van Volkinburg (London College of Fashion) and Lisa Chatterton (The Fashion Innovation Agency), dives into Gen Z’s interactions with diverse XR fashion products, aiming to enhance engagement and drive consumer actions within the fashion industry. With the digital clothing market poised to reach $4.8 billion USD by 2031, this presentation will discuss the challenges and opportunities in creating compelling XR experiences that resonate with a younger audience.

In collaboration with M-XR, a leader in digital fabric scanning technology, this study utilised cutting-edge 3D materials and immersive interfaces (VR, MR, AR, and Desktop) to analyse Gen Z’s preferences. Through ethnographic observations and focus groups, the project uncovered key insights for fashion retailers: creating environmental synergy, embracing social factors, and fostering co-creation in XR experiences.

Join the seminar to hear Nina and Lisa share their findings and outline a future research agenda focused on immersive storytelling and enhancing the customer experience in the digital fashion landscape.
