XR Network+ online seminar: Exploring new formats for game and performance

2:00 pm - 17 Jul 2024

Online

Learn about two research and development projects at the University of Nottingham’s Virtual and Immersive Production (VIP) studio that received funding from XR Network+.

Launched in 2023, the VIP Studio is a specialist production facility based at the University of Nottingham, incubating innovation in both production and audience engagement within film, TV, gaming, and performance arts. The VIP Studio enables collaborative research and experimentation through to commercialisation, while facilitating skills and talent development through research projects, artist residencies and outreach programmes.

FINELINE is an existing live show by contemporary circus performers Lumo Company. Parts of FINELINE were captured by the VIP Studio, using volumetric and 360° video, mo-cap, and spatialised audio content. The studio produced a virtual reality demo that enabled users to navigate between excerpts from the show, each staged in its own generative artificial intelligence environment. The VIP studio is now working towards producing a digital version of FINELINE that could tour to arts venues and festivals.

The second project is framed around one of the fastest growing industries in the world, tabletop roleplaying. Recognising the post-2020 need for better hybrid interaction, the project worked with a professional games master to develop the ‘hybrid table’. Games provide a framework both of materials and social rules that make them a perfect space to examine how to avoid remote participants becoming ‘second class citizens’ in hybrid experiences. The VIP Studio’s hybrid table uses 360° video and a synchronised physical/digital table to support playing together.
