Simulation and XR webinar

3:30 pm - 25 Sep 2025

Online

Join us from 3:30pm to 4:30pm on Thursday 25 September to learn about two research and development (R&D) projects funded by XR Network+ that are using Virtual Production technologies to advance the capabilities of digital simulations.

The use of high-precision simulations in emergency response training can reduce the damage caused by natural disasters. However, current methods of earthquake simulation require heavy computing resources, and rarely operate in real-time. In our first presentation, Ali Asadipour (Royal College of Art) will share insights from his ongoing research, merging scientific physical simulation engines with game engines to create an improved earthquake simulation, delivering real-time performance alongside greater visual fidelity. This latest phase of the project focused on developing a more user-friendly version of the simulation, that allows the user to more easily customise their individual simulation with the relevant terrains and buildings.

For our second presentation, London College of Fashion’s Ben Turnbull and Mollie Gibb, alongside Copper Candle’s James Simpson, will discuss their collaboration addressing the knowledge gap in the design and application of hair, make-up and/or prosthetics for digital characters in digital performance – including 3D animation, gaming and live 3D, interactive performance events. The project developed workflows for learners in the field, aiding with the creation of more engaging, innovative characters that inhabit and embody their story-worlds. The project built towards the creation of performance characters that featured as part of a “live” event experience in Fortnite, as well as an audience avatar prototype that reflected a real-life person visiting the digital world. Over the course of the project, the team also explored the ethical implications involved with portraying real-life humans within digital experiences.

This webinar will be hosted by Jane Harris (University of the Arts London – Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute). Following the presentations, Jane will talk to the presenters about their work. The webinar will also feature an update on current activity from the wider XR Network+ project.
