Online seminar: Exhibition and XR

2:00 pm - 14 Jul 2025

Online

Hear about two new research and development projects funded by XR Network+ that are exploring how extended reality (XR) technologies are changing the ways that exhibitions are presented to audiences.

In our first presentation, Claire O’Brien (Teesside University), Ellie Land and Lucy Wheeler will share insights into how they have worked towards developing a site-specific, interactive art experience that aims to share narratives of the North Shields’ fishing communities with members of the public. The team explored how the combination of depth-sensor cameras, game-engine software and AI could result in a performative art experience that will respond to multiple bodies in a public space.

Our second presentation focuses on two case studies that used volumetric capture to explore ways in which museum exhibitions of different cultures can maintain their cultural context and specificity. Building upon their earlier ‘Charged Objects of Performance’ project, Donatella Barbieri and Ben Turnbull (both from London College of Fashion) will present the set of ethical guidelines developed for a prototype exhibit on Indian dance, as well as findings from a mixed reality performance of a Yoruba folktale, designed in collaboration with creators from the Yoruba London diaspora.

This webinar will be hosted by Damian Murphy (Director of XR Stories and XR Network+) and, following the presentations, Damian will chat to the presenters about their work. The webinar will also feature an update on current activity from the wider XR Network+ project.
